While reassembling the engine covers, I dropped a 10mm socket and a 3/8" extenstion in the engine compartment. It ended up on the heat shield that protects the passenger side exhaust header. Had to put it back on the ramps, crawl under the car, remove the heat shield (5 10mm screws - good thing I had an extra 10mm socket!). That was an hour long detour.

Not sure which cars this pertains to...(mine is a 535i with the battery under the seat)... however, if you are standing on the passenger side... and under the hood where the battery would normaly be (? I assume that is right at the firewall)... there is a plastic box... between the box and the fender is a small space... look down in there and see how many "caps" to washer fluid, additive bottles, etc etc. are sitting in there... Mine had 5 different ones... took 10 minutes to fish them all out... your socket loss reminded me .....?
