Isn't there an 8mm hex socket punched in the center. Perhaps it was a change for '95. If you manage to re-use the original thread, get this version from the dealer, it cost me about $3.
My plug was stripped when I bought my '95 530 at 29K, and only dealers had changed the oil up to that point. I was able to force it out and reuse the threads but had to be very gentle tightening it from then on.

The drain plug on my 540i is 17mm.
