Urgent: 530i T-stat gasket (archive)

I am replacing the thermostat on my car (M60 engine) and have pulled it and the housing. Now I am installing the new gasket, housing and t-stat. The Bentley manual says the gasket goes in first, then the t-stat, then the housing over this. But this seems backwards and the t-stat and housing don't fit well together in this configuration. Instead it looks like the order should be t-stat, gasket outside it, and then the housing which would sandwich the gasket between it and the t-stat.

Unfortunately, I forgot to look at the order when disassembling and have limited reference materials (as Bentley is the only manual.

Please reply directly, am trying to get this back together tonight.
