Sorry to hear your tale!
Couple of tips...
a. Don't use paint thinner. Use WD40 on any tar....then rewax the spot.
b. Do your drain plug up by hand first. Clean off threads with a clean rag use a new washer then use your hands to put it in!
You can then use a torque wrench to finish it off.
c. When you get fuel filters get new clamps!
