What is the BEST way to care for chrome wheels? (archive)

I have a white '95 525i and had my wheels chromed recently. I want to know what is the best way to take care of them so that they last? I heard from dealers that soap and water is what you should use to clean your chromed wheels. However, I wanted to know if there is any reputable proven product out there that will protect it and maintain the high chrome luster? Also, how long does chromed wheels really last?

Please advise if you know from experience. Thanks.
