i have same problem on 525i '89 203k miles
but i think it happens when it downshifts from 4 to one of lower gears, it does it with knocking...

i heard that some of gaskets might be worn out
i am going to replace the fluid on Lubro Molly one and see if it helps

1989 535ia, 135,000 miles. Recently noticing a slight "clunk" when auto transmission downshifts from 2nd to 1st gear while slowing down to a stop. Any clues as to what might cause this.
