My 1991 535i displayed the same message a few months ago. When this happens, the trans goes into "limp home" mode, which I believe puts it in either 3rd or 4th gear all the time.However, like yours, after about the third time I restarted, the message disappeared and the car ran fine. I posted a message and had a couple of people say it can be dirty electrical contacts. But whatever it was, when it went away on its own, I didn't go looking to fix it. The car has been fine ever since. So...sometimes it's just best to be thankful and let it go at that!!!
