Hello Doug,

I had a similar situation about 2 years ago on my '89 535i. The problem would appear and then go away. Over time, however, the message began appearing more often. The problem turned out to be a speed sensor in the rear portion of the transmission. The part was about $35 and took about 30 minutes to change out. I have found that a number of these magnetic sensors on the 535is have about an 8-10 year life span. As your car gets older, look for the water level sensor and the speed sensor in the differential to start giving problems.

Good Luck!

I got a "Trans program" error message today on the check control display. The manuals not much help. Later in the day I went out to drive the car and no message and it worked just fine. The car runs perfect and has never had any problems. What's up with the error message? 1992 535iA.
