How did you go about bleeding the system? Did you use a pressure bleeder? I think this system needs one as the bleed nipple is not at the highest point in the slave.

Also, I found it necessary to pump the pedal a few times (with bleeder closed) to get the master to fill correctly, even with a pressure bleeder.

If you don't have a pressure bleeder, here's what I suggest: close the bleeder, fill the reservoir and pump the pedal a few times. You may have to lift it by hand for a few strokes. Once you feel some pressure, start bleeding the slave slowly, that is, crack it open a little, not all the way. See if this works. Keep the fluid level high in the reservoir throughout!
