advice on getting a bmw (archive)

I am planning to buy an old BMW in the next two-three weeks. I want a 5 series between 1980 and 1985. What should i look for, my budget is limited so i will be going for a low priced one. My knowledge is in old american cars only. I have no idea about these cars. So would someone please tell me problem areas that i should check or what things should raise a warning flag. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.
