You should definitely try to sell it privately. By way of example, the previous owner of my '90 535i 5-speed with 104k miles was offered $6k in trade on his new 528iT. I bought it for $7800. If he had taken longer than a week to sell it, I'm sure he could have gotten another $1-$2k for it.

The best place to sell it would be in the Roundel, but that requires at least 6 weeks lead time. Otherwise, list it online at autotrader.com, excite.com and yahoo.com.

You can find a reasonable estimated sales value at Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com) or NADA (www.nada.com), by averaging the trade-in and retail values. Edmunds.com also lists used car values, but tends to be lower than the other 2 sites. It may take a while to find the right buyer, but hang in there.
