I had a similar smell on start-up and found a small fuel leak on the top rear of the engine at the end of the 2 inch piece of flexible fuel pipe where it connects to the injector rail. Replacing the pipe & clips cured the problem. (remember the system is pressurised, so depressurise before removing the pipe!)
