There is a small tube that plugs into the passenger side of the battery with a 90 degree elbow fitting. It runs down the side of the battery and out the bottom of the car. It is there so explosive gasses caused by charging the battery don't collect under the seat.

Today I decided to check the water in my battery which was replaced 9 months ago with an oem battery by my local BMW dealer. When I removed the first cap I was rewarded with a loud wooshing sound like a beer can opening, and acid sprayed all over the battery compartment. Thanks to this forum I knew to check the vent tube. Sure enough they had plopped the battery right down on top of the vent tubing which was totally closed off. It would have taken them one second to check for this obvious mistake. I'm really pissed off that my 8 year old daughter has been (literally) sitting on a potential time bomb for the past 9 months due to an extremely careless error. I guess I have to check EVERYTHING from now on.
