Hi John, have been warned of this overheating thing by frenz who own this same series of BMWs. A good no. of complaint cases actually due to coolant cap not being tightened properly, which resulted in pressure building up in the system. Check me guys, still new in this area(recently got intrested in cars), new in yur forum too.
It's worth a check, John.

after about 15 minutes of hard city driving and i park the car for about 10 minutes and i come back the coolant thermometer is all the way in the red zone. should it be this high? outside temp is about 89 degrees and it will happen even if i dont have the heater on. the check coolant temp message goes on and am i still allowed to drive it. becuase i turn the heater all the way up and it starts going back to the middle and gets there in about a minute. am i damaging the car by driving it i keep it under 2000 rpm until it does cool down and while im moving it dosent go past the middle once it cools off. i know it should be getting hotter since the engine and fan was off before but should it get all the way to red? maybe i need a new thermostat. thanks for your advice guys
