1. Check the fuel pump. Is the fuel system pressurized?

2. Check the main and fuel pump relays. Look for power at the fuse for the fuel pump.

I own a 1989 535i with about 108,000 miles, 5 speed. Got up this morning and it wouldn't start. Turns over fine, just won't start. I noticed in the last week or so that occasionally, when I first started the car, it seemed to idle a little roughly and then would die unless I caught it and gave it a little gas. I do mostly city driving, but just yesterday went on a drive of 100 miles or so mostly at highway speeds of 70 - 80 mph.

Any troubleshooting suggestions? Thanks
