One more thing, on the ergonomics thing - Mercs are becoming a sea of tiny buttons. Hop in an S-Class. They give you a fat manual just on how to work the radio and surrounding buttonage.

I wouldn't say the Merc has better ergonomics, build quality, etc. They are both top-notch cars in those regards. The difference is mainly in how the cars perform - Merc is a very comfortable car, softer, not a very involving drive. It is very stable, but not a car that would make you want to take the long way to work. The Bimmer, on the other hand, handles much better than a sedan as large as it is should, and will be a much more rewarding drive. I feel it compromises very little comfort to achieve this, also. The 6 speeds are especially hard to come by, and are very nice. I would have to emphatically recommend the Bimmer, but you would expect that. I drive one.

Driving pleasure or luxury cruiser? They both have both traits, but they're still very different cars. It all comes down to your priorities. BMW's advantages: sport, power, stick (!); while the MB's high points may be ergonomics, fit & finish, smoothness, & warranty.

My choice is the Bimmer, mainly because I refuse to drive an auto after experiencing the sheer pleasure of the 5-speed. It all comes down to what you're looking for in a car.
