I had a similar problme in my 89 535i. It was caused by the locking nut on the strut casing backing off a half turn. The strut (worn) was pivoting slightly in the cylinder and causing the sound. Jack the side up that makes the noise. Pull the wheel and grasp the spring tightly . try to foce the spring inward toward the wheel well. If you hear no clunk then put the wheel bak on and tighten the lugs. Slowly lower the vehicle onto the floor as you listen for any movement/noises. This is the best way in my opinion to simulate a real driving condition in slow motion (where the strut and mount usnergoes full range of motion. When you get just slightly more than half of the weight of that side on the wheel. Reach in and start the car and have someone rock the wheel slowly right to left to put some stress on the ball joints and control arms. If you have noice in your U/LCA or bj's. you'll hear it this way.

When I stop while backing up, there is this loud clunk noise coming from the front Driver side just as the car coming to a full stop. Can someone please tell me what it might be. I already retightened the wheel nuts. Thanks
