The earlier M20 motor cars have less h.p. and require more maintenance (e.g. SOHC w/cam belts, adjustable valve clearance) than the later M50 motors (e.g DOHC w/chain driven cams, hydraulic lifters). The last 6 cylinder engine iteration was the M50tuB25 VANOS motor from MY 93 to 95 which, IMHO, is the best motor to have...then again, I am prejudiced!

I have a 1995 525i with the M50tuB25 motor, which is the last 6cyl model E34 made. They gave it some additional cosmetic upgrades (e.g. body coloured lower cladding) to finish off the model run!
