Drive Belt replacement (archive)

I've noticed that the alternator drive belt on my M50 525i 24v is looking a bit cracked. Are there any problems replacing it as a DIY job? The service manuals available here in the UK don't cover the M50 engine & the drive belt seems to follow a long route. Where do you check the tension for example? I'd be grateful for any help.
