I've noticed that the alternator drive belt on my M50 525i 24v is looking a bit cracked. Are there any problems replacing it as a DIY job? The service manuals available here in the UK don't cover the M50 engine & the drive belt seems to follow a long route. Where do you check the tension for example? I'd be grateful for any help.

Mark,
It should be fairly straightforward. If I remember correctly, my wife's '95 525i M50TU has 2 belts, and both have spring-loaded tensioners, so tensioning is not a problem. It is definitely DIY, and I would encourage it. It gives you a chance to check things like clutch fan, water pump shaft wear, thermostat housing condition, and to get a feel for how everything works together there. Good luck, and buy a Bentley manual. I think they're available for sale on this site. If not, go to www.bavauto.com.
