The crank nut is spec'd at 318 lbs-ft. Naturally, when removing one that's been in there for years, it takes even more, it seems, to get it off.

You have to remove the pulley first and then attach an arm to the crank. I doubt very much it can be taken off, and even more importantly, put back right any other way.

Check with your dealer or local BMW shop to see if they would let you borrow the tool.

BTW, if you do it yourself, ask the same shop for the special tricks they use to seal the timing covers. It appears to be more complicated than merely applying one sealant all around.
