My pump was doing the same buzzing for 6 months afterwhich it started to make louder bursts of buzz....????and finally died(3 months later).
I was stranded about 200km from home on a Sunday.
Had it replaced and been running fine with NO noticeable sound from the outside or inside the car,as opposed to previously.

coming from my fuel pump........1990 525i......noticed it AFTER I changed out my fuel filter and was looking for leaks. Might also be described as a buzzing noise. ???????????
