540i poor performance (archive)

Had the engine block change performed on my 540i about three months ago. I have now developed a oil leak which seems to be coming from the pan, the dealer says it is from the valve covers. Question, if you have an oil leak at the valve covers would this degrade engine performance. When I use to pull the oil dipstick the engine would sputter and shake, if I do it now there is no difference. The car just runs bad all the time hot or cold. Any other item s to check besides the O2 sensors?
