It could be wear in the shift fork inside the transmission. If this is the case the situation will gradually get worse over the next 6 months. You could replace the shift fork, which when I priced it was about $900, but the odds are that it is only a symptom of the real problem and would come back again in 6-12 months.

This happened to me, with 3rd gear beign the first to experience the popping out of gear when enganged symptom.

I wound up replacing the transmission with a remanufactured unit from Jim Blanton.

I based my decision on the fact that I planned to keep the car for several more years.

Hi,
I have a 1990 535i, 5 speed, for the last few weeks I have noticed that when I try to put the shifter in the 1st grear the shifter wont stay in (jumps out 50% of the time)
I live in Rome, and as you know we don't have "good" mechanics here.. lol.

would you please help.
