It's simple - your fan clutch has locked up and takes a while to break loose. You need a new one.

Even when it works normally a similar thing happens in warm weather in city driving, but it only takes a fews seconds to break loose.

Help! No one can help me with this yet and it's driving me crazy (sorry for the pun). When I drive my car, which is an automatic, for about 20 min. of city driving, it gets a sound like the engine is going 120 mph, when the speed has not changed. The dealer said it is not "reving". Someone else said it was only the fan coming on. But the sensation is that it kind of pulls back on me, that it takes more gas (slightly) to get going. Is this normal for a 540i? I really find it annoying--not a really smooth, quiet ride, for sure! Please, please help. Thanks, Sandy
