I washed my 95 525i this weekend. Did not lift hood at all. Then got in to move it and wouldn't start.

After you washed it,
did you turn the key and let it crank until
it fired up, or did you crank and release,
crank and release, repeatedly trying to
start it? If you did the latter, chances
are you flooded the engine when you tried
to restart.

If you start a cold
car, drive it for 30 seconds backing it out
of the garage, then shut off. There can
be a significant amount of unburnt fuel in
the engine. When you go to restart, the FI
computer thinks the car is cold, and injects
additional fuel. This can easily flood the
engine. Seen it on BMW's, Mercedes, Toyota/Lexus,
etc. When you start your car, turn the key and
hold it there (cranking) until the car starts
(or an inordinately lengthy period passes, like
half a minute).
