'89 creaking like a mother (archive)

Hi All,

My '89 535i recently started creaking noticably from the front drivers side - I can here it when I'm braking (which is a bummer because I always liked how tight the car is), and when I turn right (slowly, like in a parking lot).

Any thoughts before I cart it to my mechanic (and the invariable $1200 bill?)
