Its kind of a roaring sound, it will come and go at one speed in slow traffic. There is parasitic drag so you'll notice a very slight pulling. about 3 horsepower i believe, It will seem like it pulls back just slightly. It won't be continous it will come and go. If you watch the temperature gauge it will correspond with engine temperature. The fan clutch engages or disengages according to The temperature of the air passing through the radiator. if the radiators hot then the fan clutch engages. It also will engage briefly when you first start the car in the morning for 20 seconds or so until the fluid starts circulating .
Help! No one can help me with this yet and it's driving me crazy (sorry for the pun). When I drive my car, which is an automatic, for about 20 min. of city driving, it gets a sound like the engine is going 120 mph, when the speed has not changed. The dealer said it is not "reving". Someone else said it was only the fan coming on. But the sensation is that it kind of pulls back on me, that it takes more gas (slightly) to get going. Is this normal for a 540i? I really find it annoying--not a really smooth, quiet ride, for sure! Please, please help. Thanks, Sandy
