I went through the same thing with my 93 525i. I changed the thermostat and it was still overheating. I then thought I didn't bleed the air right, so I brought it to my friend who's a general auto mechanic and he bled the air. It improved the situation a little, but it was still overheating when I drove it. It wouldn't overheat until I put a load on the engine when I drove it around the block. My mechanic friend also thought it could be the fan clutch and he recommend that I bring it into the dealer/stealer. Well I did end up getting robbed. They first charged me $80+ for evaluating the situation. Then after suggesting that I installed the thermostat incorrectly and me insisting that I did it correctly. They went in and fixed the correct problem, i.e. the water pump. In reading this board and others it turns out that this is a very very common problem on this year and model. The water pump has a plastic impeller that breaks. In my opinion the dealer should have known about this immediately and went in and fix it without charging the $80 examination fee and try to sell me a new thermostat. When it was all said and done it cost me $600+. I also had the fan belts replaced, but when I walked out of the place I really really felt like I got ripped off.You might try and tackle the replacement yourself. However, please note that one of the bolts is under the fan and kind of hard to get to. It requires a thin wrench and it screws out clockwise (the opposite of normal bolts). You also need to hold the fan, so it doesn't turn when you try to remove the bolt. There's a special tool for this, but you probably can get by, by bracing the fan somehow. You might also look at past posting in this message board for a description of this problem along with more detailed removal instructions.
The other thing you could do is buy the part (from BMP or Barvarian) and have a non dealer mechanic do the installation.
I have a 93 525i. I changed the thermostat and followed the manual on bleeding the system but still over-heating? Any suggestions?
