They won't let you keep it because BMW takes them, dismantles them and reman's the crank and rods for the Alusil engines.

Just wondering, will BMW allow you to keep the rotted out block when they replace it with the new one? I would like to have it to sit next to my old fried slushbox in the garage. I don't know why, I just feel better having broken parts in my garage, like the rad. fan missing 5 blades from a mountain dew bottle at approx 120 mph, the cracked and rotted belts from 3 different bimmers, plus window switches that failed in my 250,000k 1983 533i over 5 years ago.

Oh lord, My family is right. I'm one sick puppy.

I gotta go and get some counseling. The parts counter at BMW is open another hour and a half, only they can help my terminal condition.
