Most likely it was caused by a poor connection at the fuse. Corrosion, loose attachment etc. You should clean all contact points to ensure the best connection. If it generated enough heat to melt the box, then it had been going on for some time.

Hi all,

I drive a 89 520i and 3 hours ago on my way home, the car went bonkers! The battery warning light came on for a split second and then everything shut down...the engine, lights, air, radio, brakes. I could not even get the hazard lights on!

I am not very good with cars, so I called the local Automobile Association for a tow truck. Along came a BMW rescue vehicle (this is operated by the Bimmer sole agent in Singapore)and he stopped to help (of course...)

He replaced the main fuse (?)..this is the fuse that is contained in a little black box that is connected to the battery. The black box had melted down from heat!! He didn't have the box and told me to send it down to the shop to have it replaced, but the fuse should hold for a while.

My question this common?? I am not good with cars and would appreciate advice on how this could have happened AND can I wait a week before replacing the box.

Sorry for my ignorance!! Thanks.
