the computer is expecting a certain on and off time that corresponds with the engine speed. in a perfect world the on and the off time would be equal. i have no idea what BMW is expecting.
the sensing distance affects the on off time. too far away and it will not turn on at all. too close and the on-off pulse will not be correct, it could be possible that the sensor may not turn off at all, this would be the case in where it is close enough to the teeth to sense the gaps as well as the teeth.
if you are having a problem with it, why not just adust it to the corect position.
