Performance tires in the cold (archive)

This past spring I upgraded from stock basket weave to 17" wheels. i also put on Yokohama AVS tires.

I live in Northern Virginia where it can get cold but most of the time it doesn't get to much below freezing. For the snow I've got a truck.

I heard the rubber on performance tire is softer and more prone to damage in cold climates. Is there any potential damage I should be aware of for driving the AVS tires in cold? What experience do you guys have? Thanks.
