I had a similar prob and after reading on this list that one can clean the idle control valve with carb cleaner, I tried my luck:
A lot of black gump cleaned out but no significant change (in the meantime I have been told that this procedure could damage the valve, so be carefull - a new one is about 220$).
My 540 is at the garage for the same reason. They found a leak were the engine sucks in air and changed the timing (the 540 engine has a reputation for idle problems). Apparently those two probs were causing poor idle...I will pick her up this afternoon and let you know. At this time I will also be around 1200$ poorer :-(
