In Reply to: oil in the coolant expansion chamber--HELP! posted by ram on October 27, 2000 at 14:44:30:

I have a terrible problem tat sounds like a head gasket issue. Driving the other day, my car blue a coolant hose from the water pump to the engine (a tube about 8 inches long). When it was repaired, the tech went to check the coolant and found engine oil in the expansion coolant chamber. The car had been running fine, but now they think the head gasket needs fixed (about $1300). Could this be caused by something else. Any recommendations. The car is a 535 ia 1992 with 130k miles. Purchased with 116k, and ran great across the USA. Help with any advice and if you are from the Boston area, any recommendations for repair techs.

I used Alumniseal radiator anti-leak successfully for two years in my e34 to fight expansion tank leaking at the crimp joint to the radiator. I new I was going to make the repair one day but I was happy to delay the repair until I lost my nerve and performed the propper fix. Perhaps you could do the same and drive your car another 100k miles before you have the head off. Could be worth a try.

Sometimes you get into all sorts of trouble with the head off such as replacing the block because there is crack at the head bolt threads. You then wished you left the engine alone because it was running great before you touched it.

For me I knew I had nothing to loose because the engine never was going to overheat and never did. When I replaced the radiator, I replaced the water pump and everything else in there. The coolant pasages were remarkably clean considering all the stop leak additive I put in there. Jim
