Having own a 924, 944 And 911 and done maintenance at my shop on all three I do believe they have more difficult and expensive maintenance then BMWs.
They drive very nicely and are quite fast, but then so are M cars.

The 944 Turbo's don't really require any more maint. than BMWs and the reliability may actually be better in some cases.
As long as the timing belt has been changed regularly they are usually good to go many miles. Other than that - just like all cars they have items that just wear over time and have to be replaced.

The stock horsepower is strong but can be upgraded very easily. The brakes are very good. The ride and handling is better than but sort of comparable to a touring car. Typically these cars can pull 160+ mph. Pretty good for a 2.5 liter - 4 cylinder!

Depending on how much $ you are going to spend - the '88 - '89 944 Turbo "S" is the model to get. More horsepower, different/wider wheels and larger front brakes.

Hope this helps,
