Hi Dave,
I have an '89 535iA, haven't experienced what you are describing, mine had 115k when I got it and one of the first things I did was change the distributor cap and rotor. Pricy little buggers, it did make quite a difference as far as throttle response and smoothness in the engine. It is an easy job and chances are they are original(mine was). If you have an inspection coming due soon, you might consider this along with the regular inspection. Hope this helps.

since i bought my 92 bmw535i with 90K i always had this problem that the car stumbles intermettently or misfires(i think) !! when traveling between 40-50mph.
Does anyone experince the same, is there a service bulletin for this problem?
