James, here's a bit of additional info and
some corrections to your post

> All 1994 and early 1995 540i 6spd have a lower, stiffer suspension

Right, but I think this was carried thru to to
the end of the 1995 mdl year production, not just
thru early 95'.

> All use a limited slip diff.

Traction control was an option, even with the 6spd

> A M5 version 540i with the same V8.
There was no M5 version in the USA in 1995.

> See if you can take the car to a BMW dealer

You only need the VIN number, not the car itself
to see what warranty wk has been done, as well as
the in-service date (for the engine replacement
warranty). If you can find out where the car
was serviced in TX, that dealer should be willing
to tell you about it's service history (not the
same thing as what's in warranty/recall service
info that any BMW dealer can pull up).
However, it's aways a good idea to get a pre-pur
inspection by a competent mechanic.

A good body shop will just transfer the vin
tags to the new sheet metal, but if they
take the time to do that, they probably
do a good job on everything.
