And you probably hit right on the head. Ours shuddered during low accerlation and drove me nuts. It would fade after about 40.
I learned that the 535 has a multiple jointed drive shaft and after about 85k the joints begin to go bad. Some worse and faster than others. I was told it could maybe last another 50k with the vibration or it could give out any day. Given that this shaft turns quite fast and is tied to the transmission out put spline and rearend gears, I didn't want to risk damaging either by driving on a wobbly shaft.
Unfortunately, the u-joints are not the usual type and is best left to an experienced machine shop who has done the BMW type.
I had a non-dealer BMW shop do the job and it ran me about $550. He got a rebuilt shaft out of Arizona with mine as core exchange. Took them about a day to do it. It was a little more complicated than I thought it would be. There's a lot or exhaust and transmission supports to be removed to access the shaft. (This is not to say an experienced DIY'r with a good assortment of tools and a extra hand couldn't do it.) I just didn't want to waller on the ground trying to muscle this thing out and back in.
The shop has a lift and it really makes the job easier and faster. Plus I get a warranty if anything goes bad with it or the work.
Good luck

When taking off from a stop position there is a slight vibration from the rear of the car. Has anyone ever had this happen and could it be the universal joints. It's just a light vibration and goes away after around 40mph.
