I drive a 89 520i and 3 hours ago on my way home, the car went bonkers! The battery warning light came on for a split second and then everything shut down...the engine, lights, air, radio, brakes. I could not even get the hazard lights on!
I am not very good with cars, so I called the local Automobile Association for a tow truck. Along came a BMW rescue vehicle (this is operated by the Bimmer sole agent in Singapore)and he stopped to help (of course...)
He replaced the main fuse (?)..this is the fuse that is contained in a little black box that is connected to the battery. The black box had melted down from heat!! He didn't have the box and told me to send it down to the shop to have it replaced, but the fuse should hold for a while.
My question is...is this common?? I am not good with cars and would appreciate advice on how this could have happened AND can I wait a week before replacing the box.
Sorry for my ignorance!! Thanks.
The same thing happened to me . I have a 92 525 i The mechanic replaced the main relay(??) and it was fine for a couple of weeks but it happened again yesterday . Really scary! I had it towed back to the shop and I will find out the "new story " tomorrow. How has your car been since? I will tell them the fuse angle..Please e-mail back if you have any other suggestions or if you have gotten any more info. Thanks,Louise
