The previous owner of our 1991 535i was in the same situation as yourself and updated.

The latter cars had a different bumper rubbing strip as well. On an early E34 the rubbing strips are smooth on a 1993 e34 onwards the strips have a rough dimpled finish. The mirrors are also different but our car has the early ones.
