It is probably because most of the E39's are still leased and that most of the owners have not experienced replacing maintenance or wear parts either themselves or by a dealer.

I believe most of us E34ers own our cars because we like the model/style and, most likely are not caught up in the constant need to stroke ourselves and impress the neighbours by committing valuable resources (CASH!) to reinvent or buttress our images every 2 or 3 years.
