Haha my '89 535i does the same thing. I posted the same question about 6 months ago, and someone e-mailed me the fix (you have to replace several capacitors). I just unplugged the battery for about an hour, it reset the whole thing, and it's been OK since, although last week I made a panic stop and now my display is in german (the message that normally says "Front Fog Light Out" is displayed in German, translated to "Nebula Light Off". Don't torch the car, just disconnect the battery.

I have an 89 535 that has a completely mental dashboard. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the messages are in English, sometimes in German. Sometimes it just starts flashing numbers and letters all over the place and and gets really whacky. Sometimes when everything is ok and I attempt to stop at a red light, after depressing the brake and slowing down the lights go crazy again. And when I take off real hard and the engine revs out the dash kicks back on again. Forget about the electric chime. It just about rings all the time. I had to remove the damn thing......drove me nuts. I took it to BMW.......3 times......and of course it never happens when they're checking it out. Has this ever happened to anyone. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm ready to put a match to the car.
