I bought a generic holder for my 91 525 from Wallmart it's made by Glade and to my surprise works great. I mounted it at the rear of the center console opening. It has two mounting pods that adjust by turning a knob and it adjusts to different size cups by turning a ring at the base.
It holds cups very securly and costs about $7.00. Wish I could get one for my E39 as the factory holders are useless but, there's nowere to mount it.
