I love it when a plan comes together! I've been looking for a set of E39 15-spoke radial wheels, like the ones on my 2000 540i for my friend who just bought a low mileage (21,000 miles) 1995 540i 6-speed. Someone sent me an email this afternoon saying they had a set in great condition for sale and was I interested? Turns out that he lives 5 miles from my house and we were at the same BMW club meeting a few weeks ago! It's a small world.
A few hours later, I was at his house. The wheels were in really good shape and I bought them for $975. Now they are sitting in my basement!
My friend ordered a set of tires from Tire Rack tonight and we'll get them mounted later this week so we can put them on his car after we pick it up Saturday from Peabody, Massachusetts.
In another ironic twist, the guy selling the wheels had a 1990 525i with wheels from a 1991 M5 (turbine fan style) and he also had a beat-up set of 1993 M5 "throwing star" wheels. So I was able to see, close-up, both types of wheels and see how the covers were attached. Interesting coincidence, given that I had been trying to learn about these wheels over the last couple days.
This message board has been great! It helped me find the perfect E34 540i last week and today it helped me get the E39 wheels for it.
