What it sounds like is if you view your site in say, 640x480 (but God knows why you would surf in that awful res) it's hard to use due to it running off the screen. When a friend of mine came to me with same prob, I just wrote a javascript routine to load the appropriate indices based on screen size as read by script. Personally, I think it's a pain so I just design for 800x600.
