Peter is right about the Tranny - Look closely at it with a mechanic. I recently bought a '92 myself, and the prev owner had kept very good records. After a few tranny shifting problems early on, the trans was replaced as a recall item with about 6K miles on the car. No detail in the report just WHAT the recall was, but my Touring was built June 92, delivered July 92. (If this one made it to 150K, it prolly does not have that recall issue....)

Other things - it is a pleasure to work on, a pleasure to drive, and those things that go wrong with other e34's happen on the Touring. Peter's list was quite comprehensive regarding those Touring-specific items you should be wary of.

Some areas in PA use LOTS of salt - check the inside bottom of the door skins behind the rubber moldings for hidden cancer.

'92 525i Touring

I have found a 92 525i touring for sale. About $9,8500. 150,000 miles. The gentleman owner has said that it had a slight slipping when it shifted at times. He checked it, saw that the plug was wet, assumed it was low, drained it and filled with red-line auto fluid, and said it hadn't slipped again. I am in Fort Worth and the car is in Pennsylvania. Is this a good deal? I plan on flying there and driving it back. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

James
