I had my block (1994 530ia) raplaced about 12k miles ago (@ 72k miles) and it idles fairly smoothly, with just a very faint hint of "rocking". I believe this is probably normal for an engine tuned to the degree that the V8's are. If your's is excessive, I would check to see if one of the ignition coils is bad, or it there is a problem with the fuel injection system, such as dirty injectors, low pressure, etc. Another thing that could cause this is if there is an air leak into the intake manifold. I have heard of this happening when some blocks were changed out, due to a leak in the intake manifold gasket. If the engine does, indeed, rock more than before, the dealer may just be trying to "cover" themselves by convincing you that there is not a problem. If they say there is nothing they can do, I would take it to another dealer or good independent shop for another diagnosis - if there is a problem that was caused by faulty workmanship during the block replacement, would demand that the dealer make the necessary repairs and compensate me for the additional diagnostic fee.

just curious if anyone has experienced a stronger than expected lope at idle with their new short block(especially in their 530i 5 speed). I have 2,500 miles on my new block and feel that the idle lopes or rocks more so than my old Nikasil block. Keep in mind I also paid the dealer to tune the valves and service "everything" that was not included/covered in the block replacement. Dealer says the car idles great which leads me to believe I am victim to the infamous "that's just the way the V-8's are" excuse. My 530i is running great, however the idle seems to lope/rock at idle, red lights, to the point where you feel it in the driver seat. So basically I am curious if any other 530/540 owners with new blocks are experiencing the same thing. Thanks

95 530i 5 speed
