Hi Rory,
Actually, I tried your first suggestion with my ex-wife on the hood. The towels went flying off and so did she. Man I miss those towels. Seriously, it appears the car has the factory wind shield, you know BMW stickers and all. However, I'd try anything right now. One of the good guys on the board sent me the factory tech bulletin on this problem which BMW attributed to the 2 piece grille. However, as mentioned, that wasn't the fix. I love my E-34, but this freakin noise is p***ing me off. All the same, I appreciate your suggestion.

Best regards,
Tim C.

Hi Tim,

In order to test this you need to get on the hood (use cotton towels so that you don't scratch the paint) and ask your SO or a friend to get the car up to 75 or 80. While holding on for dear life, listen around to see where the popping sound is coming from :o)

But seriously, I had a similar problem on my dearly departed 525i for the longest time. One day, a truck decided to throw a rock at my windshield and put a nice big crack in my windshield. Once the repairman pulled out the windshield, he found that the last person to replace it failed to replace the gaskets properly causing the nice popping/vibration sound. He replaced them and the problem was solved. Hope your situation is similar.

Best,
Rory

To all the good guys who tried to help on this one...Noise (cracking or popping) coming from dash or fire wall at 75-80 mph. Was believed to be loose 2 piece plastic grille at base of windshield. Removed, put sealant putty on it and problem still persist. Removed grilles intirely to isolate problem. Still makes noise. Any suggestions. It's definitely related to wind as there is no symptoms under any other condition (i.e. RPM's, road condition, air conditioning, heater, blower). In advance, thanks again.
