Borrowed a special BMW O2 tool from my favorite mechanic and changed it in about 15 minutes. Tool is designed specifically for clearing exhaust pipes.

I replaced my O2 sensor in my 1991 535i about a year ago and it was a real pain. It is directly on the top of the catalytic convertor. I had to lower the whole exhaust to get to it. I think next time I'm paying to have it done. If you have a 535i, you'll have to have the entire car up in the air at least a foot to lower the exhaust enough to get to it. Good luck!
